  • censorship.
Consumers must now protect against the rise in online crimes such as fraud,theft and extortion.

Internet Ethics


Consider Ethical behavior online; including privacy issues and the spread of spam & computer viruses

According to the Encyclopedia of Business and Finance ethics are a collection of principles of right conduct that shape the decisions people or organizations make. this means that online businesses must implement standards of fairness when making decisions in behavior and in the practice of the organization. Ethical issues within an online business usually result in people or the government wanting them to take more responsibility for their actions. This could also result in more regulations for online businesses and online marketing. Most companies feel the need to use ethical practices to keep a positive image with customers. Without positive feedback and the selling of products the companies lose money. These companies are more likely to lose that money if they are not careful in the way that they do their business. Deceptive practices trick the customer into thinking a particular price or quality of a product is better than it really is. When a product from the internet turns out to be a lower quality than what was advertised they will generally switch over to a new one. This results in a lot of lost business to companies that use unethical practices. Unethical businesses sometimes use fake price comparisons to trick the customer into thinking they are getting a deal when they are not. This could also take the form of
omitting important information on the sale or making very low price offers available only when other items are purchased. The companies can be deceiving when they lie about the way a product was constructed or how it preforms.

E-commerce comes with a lot of privacy issues because every time you give your information out to an online source it remains there forever. One of the biggest problem that most by keeping your computer protected, using websites that are trustworthy, protect your personal information, pay with a credit card, and keep all documentation for the order. People can protect their computers by keeping it updated and having anti-virus software people have with e-commerce is giving out personal information such as name, address, telephone number, email, and credit/debit card numbers. Whenever you put your information online their is a chance that it may be stolen and used by another person. People can protect themselves to prevent viruses from invading their computer. Using secure and trustworthy websites by checking the reputation of the online seller. People need to protect their personal information by reading and fully understanding the privacy policy on the website. Paying with a creedit card allows people to dispute the transaction if the product never comes or if the product sent is the wrong product. Keeping all documentation of online transactions allows people to prove the purchase if a dispute should arise.

Comment:
However companies do a lot to protect the consumer. For example Bank of America and Amazon.com use secure servers when dealing with personal information and credit card numbers. The companies usually tell you where your information such as a telephone number or an e-mail address are going before they use it.

Comment:
As stated above, e- commerce does come with a lot of privacy issues. Mark has given an explanation of why personal information gets released to hackers, and what steps you should do to protect yourself at all times. A lot of times websites display pop-ups that are unsecure and if someone clicks on them can create a vurus on your computer. Some of these sites include sources that have online shopping. A shopper needs to be incredibly careful on what they are buying, or clicking on as confusing and difficult as it may seem. The government has taken action, and is trying to help limit the amount of spam and unproper information on the internet.

Netiquette


Netiquette is a set of rules developed by the internet community to help ensure responsible use of this resource. Respect for others and creating a good first impression of you &/or your business is imperative. Where does text"talk" fit in ? Appropriate or not?

The Computer Ethics Institute developed these 10 comandments in "netiquette"
Thou shalt not use a computer to harm other people.
Thou shalt not interfere with other people's computer work.
Thou shalt not snoop around in other people's computer files.
Thou shalt not use a computer to steal.
Thou shalt not use a computer to bear false witness.
Thou shalt not copy or use proprietary software for which you have not paid.
Thou shalt not use other people's computer resources without authorization or proper compensation.
Thou shalt not appropriate other people's intellectual output.
Thou shalt think about the social consequences of the program you are writing or the system you are designing.
Thou shalt always use a computer in ways that ensure consideration and respect for your fellow humans.


Netiquette sets the rules and foundations for appropriately communicating within a business setting. Netiquette helps to guide the business in communicating effectively with its employees, as well as its future business partners. These guidelines set the basis of proper etiquette in order to maintain professionalism even while communicating through text and emails. However the recent issue with communicating through these devices is that many people are now abbreviating phrases which can be recognized as "text talk". Generally this is useful in saving time when communicating with friends or family members, but when conducting business these abbreviations need to be avoided. "Text Talk" cannot be allowed because by using it, the sender has made the assumption that the receiver is aware of what the abbreviation stands for, and this may not be the case. Generally "Text Talk" is avoided because of the high possibility of misunderstanding, but it also lacks professionalism; which is a major aspect in E-commerce. By making assumption though using "Text Talk" it insults the receivers lack of knowledge, and in doing so disrespects them. Texts and Emails cannot be used as an efficient method of communication if they don't follow Netiquette guidelines, because otherwise problems can arise between employees and their bosses, and between companies and their future business partners.

Netiquette is a philosophy of effective internet communication that sets a guide of rules and standards for effective business communication. As stated above, netiquette helps communication within a business run effectively either between employees, or business to business. E- commerce and the internet has created a new language of communication that is not easily interpreted. With this new language, or as Samantha mentioned "Text Talk" abbreviations can create key concepts be taken the wrong way. For example, in typical standard writing, a period at the end of a sentence is meant as an end, and helps transition but in "Text Talk" a period may infer anger or frustration when really it had no meaning. This leads to confusion between server and receiver which ultimately puts a strain on their relationship. If sender and receiver both follow the netiquette rules then they should remain professional, and practice traditional workplace business practices. The following are a few common netiquette behaviors:
1. Spell Check
2. No all caps
3. Be yourself
4. Do not flame
5. Do not spam
6. Tell the truth
7. Be conservative
8. Do not send an email at night
9. Shop secure sites
10. Use discretion

Comment:
The site that Melony used is very valid in how it defines what Netiquette is. This site easily explains what the basic guidelines are for the business world. The business world needs professionalism and Netiquette provides that. This site clearly states what is proper and what is not proper to do while writing any kind of email, or letter towards a fellow businessman. This site does not at all suggest that using"Text Talk" is a good thing, which makes it a proper site that is reliable to use.

Comment: The source that Melony used is a good source in regards to understanding the rules of "Text Talk" and how it should be used to create a professional business atmosphere between two businesses. Melong has covered all of the rules that "Text Talk" come with; some of the rules are understood by general reader but some might not uderstand the do n ot flame rule, which was not explained in the post. When you flame someone over "text talk" you are putting someone down; so the rule do not flame means do not put someone down through "text talk." The site that Melony used to gather her information seems to be a well rounded wbesite that is reliable because it explains each rule in length if the link is clicked on.
